Day 3 of Hashnode Bootcamp: What I learnt ✨✨✨

It's great to still have you here. The sessions delivered by the speakers since the beginning of the boot camp have been insightful and filled with amazing content. Leveraging the knowledge shared will make you stand out as a developer or writer.

I am so much excited to be part of the last day of the Hashnode Bootcamp cohort. It opened my eyes to opportunities on which I can build and become better as a technical writer and developer.

There are way more people to consume content than there are content - James Quick

In this article, I will share what I learned in today's meeting 😃😌.

5th session: Freelancing writing opportunities - James Quick

James Quick is a full-time technical creator and has been creating content for over 10 years. Crossposting on various platforms such as YouTube, TikTok etc. He shared his experience on how earned 50 cents from YouTube ads and earned over six figures in six months of 2022. He has been building his brand and networking with people. This gave him flexibility and control over his career.

This session was based on how to take advantage of freelancing opportunities in technical writing, create content and overcome writer's block. It was more of a Q&A session. I will list out most of the key points I gathered😃:

  • Be known for a particular topic. He mentioned Typescript as a technology that most developers are using now. For example, you can learn, build projects and solve problems using Typescript.

  • Niche down to a particular technology or field.

  • You can market yourself to new clients by creating a blog and having pieces of content people can refer back to. This content must be technically correct.

  • Are you bothered by where to start your blog? Hashnode ✨ is the best place to start, then you can build your website and crosspost across all platforms.

  • As content creators, you have to be part of the process by leveraging AI. Don't use AI to generate a full article😅. Don't get me wrong, except in some cases which I will explain later in this article.

  • You can leverage Hashnode AI to generate SEO keywords, titles etc.

  • Leverage the audience you have and provide values.

  • When you start as a technical writer or content creator, focus on the quantity of what you post, then with time, you can filter and focus on quality. We waste time trying to publish the best content. Commit to growth and filter out as time goes on.

  • You keep refining the output of every piece of content you create.

  • It is very safe to run a series on a particular topic.

  • Sometimes we don't want to write on a topic because we feel there is too much content on it out there. Your example or explanation could be what someone is looking for 😉.

  • For the umpteenth time, AI will not replace technical writing. It will only enable writers and content creators to do more efficiently.

Resources to use as a technical writer or content creator.

At least for now, I am writing these 3 days of boot camp experiences using my phone😅 and I edit them using Hashnode editor - such a great platform. I found it fascinating that you can use some tools to crosspost and manage your blogs. Let's dive right into it:

  • Front Matter CMS: This is a powerful content management system that can be used on Vscode to manage your blogs. It allows you to keep your files organized and track ideas. You can check it out on Front Matter CMS.

  • Video Tap: This tool allows you to convert your recorded video into blog posts you can refine. This makes you efficient as a writer. It takes just a few edits from video conversion to the ready-to-publish article. You can check it out on Video Tap.

Conclusion

Finally, it's great to still have you here. We have come to the end of the 3 days Bootcamp. I hope you were able to pick up some nuggets on how to create a personal brand and leverage social media. This positions you for opportunities as a technical writer.

It was a privilege to learn from the amazing speakers of this Bootcamp. Thank you, guys.
